Domestic Violence

What is domestic violence under the law?

Domestic violence is an assault, or threat thereof, stalking, or abuse of a related related to you, such as a spouse or biological child.

What if I called the police, but don’t want to continue with the charges?

Once the police charge someone with domestic violence, the case belongs to the state of Ohio. The person who wanted the charges brought is now a witness and cannot dismiss the charges without the prosecutor’s agreement. While the person charged virtually always needs an attorney to assist them, the person who no longer wants to prosecute may need one also.

For an extensive discussion of spousal support, see the Domestic Violence Report.
